About The Position

This role is part of Alcon's Engineering function, a team focused on improving quality, processes, products, packaging and materials across our business to help deliver brilliant outcomes. The Mold Maker is responsible for the precision repair, maintenance, and optimization of complex injection molds used in high-volume production. This role requires technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and close collaboration with Engineering and Production teams to ensure optimal mold performance, quality, and uptime at our Manufacturing Facility in Houston, TX.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English

Nice To Haves

  • Proven experience in injection mold repair, and precision toolmaking (including multi-cavity and hot runner systems).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, mold designs, and CAD models.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with a systematic, root cause–driven approach to mold and tooling issues.
  • Skilled in the use of precision measurement instruments (micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gauges).
  • Familiarity with mold disassembly, inspection, fitting, and reassembly processes.
  • Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience working in industrial or manufacturing environments, preferably in a toolroom or high-precision production setting.
  • CMMS experience and basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of injection molds, including multi-cavity and hot runner systems.
  • Disassemble, inspect, diagnose, and rebuild tooling components to restore performance and extend mold life.
  • Machine and fit precision components using toolroom equipment (mills, grinders, lathes, polishing tools).
  • Analyze mold failures and defects (flash, short shots, dimensional issues) and implement corrective actions.
  • Interpret and work from engineering drawings, CAD models, and specifications.
  • Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on molds according to schedule and best practices.
  • Clearly communicate mold condition, repair status, and root cause findings.
  • Document mold maintenance, repairs, and preventive activities in Maximo (CMMS), ensuring accurate records, traceability, and compliance with quality standards.
  • Work closely with Molding Engineering, Maintenance, Quality, and Production teams to resolve tooling-related issues.
  • Proactively identifies potential issues before they become failures.
  • Make decisions within the scope of your tasks, requiring technical skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Adhere to GxP regulations by strictly following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintaining accurate and complete documentation, ensuring rigorous quality control, and completing all required training.
  • Meet individual job requirements and contribute to the overall compliance of the organization, committing to continuous improvement and compliance with regulatory requirements.
