About The Position

Individuals are responsible to perform diagnostic and analytic testing on human specimens to produce sound, reliable data to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients. The role involves working in one or more laboratory disciplines under the supervision of a department manager, supervisor, senior technologist, or delegated in-charge individual. Employees must demonstrate competencies specific to the populations served. The position requires the ability to operate and perform basic computer programs for documentation and record keeping, and to understand and participate in all aspects of clinical laboratory testing: pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical. Anticipating and maintaining required inventory (supplies, reagents, etc.) is crucial for uninterrupted testing. The role demands the ability to work under specific time constraints and communicate effectively verbally and in writing at all levels. A positive attitude and adherence to Bronson's Standards and Plan for Excellence are expected. Responsibilities include instrument operation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting equipment problems, executing and evaluating quality control and quality assurance procedures, and documenting/reporting as required by regulatory agencies. Performing, validating, interpreting, documenting, and reporting laboratory test results based on department assignment, and performing internal and external proficiency testing are key duties. The individual must be capable of identifying and resolving problems that may adversely affect results. Assisting in training new staff and students, participating in Laboratory Quality Program activities, and potentially altering start time, shift, department(s), and/or site based on patient care needs are also part of the role. A valid Michigan driver's license and insurability may be required depending on job duties. For Point of Care Only roles, experience is preferred, and responsibilities include training non-lab testing personnel, conducting competency assessments, managing point of care instruments, troubleshooting equipment, evaluating quality control, preparing proficiency samples, managing supply inventory, and operating computer middleware programs.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in a NAACLS accredited Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science or Clinical Lab Science equivalent program for a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university and graduate within 60 days of hire.
  • OR Completion of a NAACLS approved Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science or Clinical Lab Science equivalent program with Bachelor’s degree.
  • OR Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology WITH completed certificate for program (i.e. post-baccalaureate, hospital based internship, etc.) in Medical Technology (MT) or Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) that requires 90 semester credit hour plus internship.
  • OR Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics WITH appropriate internship AND completed Associate’s Degree or completed Undergraduate Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology from a regionally accredited college/university with ASCP, AMT or equivalent MLS eligibility.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or Chemistry WITH appropriate internship AND completed Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a regionally accredited college/university with ASCP categorical certification/eligibility as Technologist in one or more of the following: (BB), (C), (H), or (M).
  • All individuals must have completed certification OR be registry eligible and complete certification within one year of hire through ASCP, AMT or equivalent credential in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology.
  • All individuals who are newly ASCP certified after January 1, 2004 or newly AMT certified after January 1, 2006 must maintain ongoing certification.
  • Foreign educated candidates must provide a detailed equivalency evaluation to include US equivalent degree.
  • Must be able to operate and perform basic computer programs associated with documentation and record keeping in the department.

  • Must be able to operate computer middleware program managing point of care analyzer interfaces, personnel management and test result management (Point of Care Only).

  • Troubleshoot point of care equipment problems and take action to resolve (Point of Care Only).
  • Evaluate POC quality control results utilizing quality assurance procedures (Point of Care Only).
  • Prepare and process external proficiency samples for non-lab testing personnel (Point of Care Only).
  • Manage and support hospital units with supply inventory to ensure uninterrupted testing (Point of Care Only).
  • Operate computer middleware program managing point of care analyzer interfaces, personnel management and test result management (Point of Care Only).
