Requirements

Completing a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
Knowledge of LLM and VLM architectures (attention, KV cache, prefill vs. decode, vision encoder fusion).
Experience with compilers (graph lowering, operator fusion, scheduling, tiling, memory planning).
Strong proficiency in Python and C++.
Comfortable profiling code to distinguish compute-bound from memory-bound behavior.

Nice To Haves

MLIR experience.
Familiarity with the AMD AI Engine (AIE) architecture.
Experience writing kernels or dataflow designs with IRON.

Responsibilities

Study where time and memory are used in LLM or VLM to propose changes for optimization.
Write and tune AIE kernels with IRON to optimize operators like GEMM, attention, normalization, and activation functions.
Present findings to the wider engineering organization at the end of the term.
Write up learned information for the team to build upon.
