About The Position

BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems (SMS) seeks a senior technical leader to direct the development and execution of next-generation space-based systems. The Mission Chief Engineer serves as the technical authority for missions, guiding programs from initial concept through operational delivery and connecting technical requirements with strategic mission objectives. The role is a primary technical liaison among engineering teams, BAE Systems SMS executive leadership, and government stakeholders. The position provides technical and programmatic direction for multidisciplinary teams, develops mission concepts and operations, guides design decisions, manages technical risks, and leads technical reviews. It also partners with program management and systems engineering leadership to align execution with organizational and customer priorities, communicates recommendations to senior decision-makers, mentors engineers, and establishes systems engineering standards. This role requires on-site work five days each normally scheduled week at the primary work location. Travel and local commuting between company campuses and other locations may be required. Work may take place in an office, laboratory, production floor, cleanroom, outdoors, or a remote research environment. Occasional work in production areas may require protective equipment, and access to other facilities may occur in various weather conditions. A security clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible, but the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission after an offer, depending on program requirements, and able to maintain the applicable clearance or access. The role may be eligible for incentive compensation, subject to business performance and management recommendations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field, plus 10 or more years of related experience; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Each higher-level degree, such as a master’s degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience; related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Degree must be from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or U.S. Department of Education.
  • Expertise developing and analyzing mission concepts, particularly integrating space, launch, and ground segments.
  • Demonstrated mastery of hardware program execution, from planning and design reviews through manufacturing, assembly, integration, testing, and on-orbit mission operations.
  • Deep proficiency in the systems engineering lifecycle, including requirements derivation, allocation and management; CONOPS development; change management; and verification and validation.
  • Proficiency in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), with hands-on experience using Cameo and Jama.
  • Extensive knowledge of mission sets and core technology areas, with a record of maintaining relationships with key personnel in the customer community.
  • Experience leading and synchronizing multidisciplinary teams in complex business environments to achieve project milestones.
  • Exceptional presentation and communication skills, including documented experience delivering technical briefings and strategic recommendations to senior decision-makers and technical audiences.
  • Must be willing and eligible for submission for applicable security clearance or access, depending on program requirements after an offer is accepted, and able to maintain it.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep technical foundation in space-based systems at the segment or mission level, with a record of successful operational delivery.
  • Ability to influence senior executives and government stakeholders through clear communication and technical authority.
  • Creativity and flexibility, and ability to thrive under pressure while balancing competing priorities without compromising technical integrity.
  • Passion for mentoring and developing engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide authoritative technical guidance and direction to multidisciplinary teams throughout the lifecycle of space systems, from concept through operational delivery.
  • Develop and execute Concepts of Operations (CONOPS) aligned with customer mission objectives, identifying gaps in the deployment process.
  • Lead complex design trade studies and ensure technical solutions are mission-optimized and scalable.
  • Own the mission’s technical risk profile and develop and execute mitigation plans.
  • Lead technical reviews, Flight Readiness Boards, and Tiger Teams to resolve complex system bottlenecks.
  • Serve as a primary technical point of contact for government customers and BAE Systems executives, translating technical challenges into strategic insights.
  • Partner with the Program Management Office and Chief Systems Engineer to align technical execution with corporate and customer priorities.
  • Prepare and deliver technical briefings and strategic recommendations to senior government officials and executive leadership.
  • Mentor and coach senior and mid-level engineers.
  • Establish systems engineering standards that support delivery of high-impact technologies.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule and effective working relationships across the department, business units, capabilities units, and company.
