About The Position

BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems is seeking an experienced Chief Systems Engineer to provide program-level systems engineering leadership for advanced technology development. The role is responsible for aligning mission needs, system architecture, and subsystem performance while leading programs through design, integration, verification, and validation. The Chief Systems Engineer leads multidisciplinary teams throughout a program lifecycle to develop, maintain, verify, and communicate the technical baseline for mission-scoped programs, including segment, element, and/or subsystem ownership. The position coordinates with customers, the Program Management Office, the Chief Engineer, other engineering disciplines, suppliers, and partners on architectural development, technical integration, and verification of space systems and associated ground and launch systems as needed. The role serves as the technical authority for a program’s technical requirements baseline and supervises and leads systems engineers. It provides systems engineering leadership across the development, verification, delivery, and operations of missions and their components, manages technical budgets and trade studies, and owns technical reviews and verification activities. The position also mentors systems engineers and supports program risk and opportunity management. This is an on-site position requiring regular in-person engagement five days each normally scheduled week at the primary work location. Work may take place in an office, laboratory, production floor, cleanroom, outdoors, or a remote research environment. Occasional work in production areas may require protective equipment, and access to other facilities in varying weather conditions may be required. Travel and local commuting between company campuses and other locations may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field, plus at least 8 years of related experience; related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Each higher-level degree, such as a master’s degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience.
  • Degree must be from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Current, active TS/SCI security clearance and ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI Polygraph.
  • Experience using requirements database tools such as DOORS, Jama, or Cameo Requirements Modeler.
  • Experience with Cameo Enterprise Architecture, SysML, and DoWAF/UAF/UPDM.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage effective and verifiable requirements, with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience in systems engineering processes, including requirements development and allocation, change management, verification, and validation.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams and meeting schedule and performance goals.
  • Extensive knowledge of missions and customers across core technology areas, including experience with the critical customer base and established relationships with key customer-community personnel.
  • Excellent presentation skills and experience presenting to senior decision-making and technical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Related experience in mission operations, mission systems, spacecraft systems, ground systems, or payloads.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical authority for the program’s technical requirements baseline and lead Systems Engineers in defining mission objectives, identifying stakeholders, and establishing system architecture.
  • Work with Engineering Management and the PMO to manage staffing assignments for Systems Engineers and Lead Systems Engineers based on mission complexity.
  • Coordinate with the PMO to balance technical performance with programmatic constraints.
  • Lead systems engineering teams in the development, verification, delivery, and operations of missions, segments, elements, and subsystems.
  • Support allocation, traceability, and verification of requirements at all levels throughout the program lifecycle.
  • Coordinate with subject matter experts to develop allocation analyses and verification artifacts.
  • Interface with and support program stakeholders, including customers, the PMO, suppliers, and internal SBUs.
  • Coordinate and own trade studies and assess their impact on the technical baseline with cross-functional teams.
  • Own activities and products for major gate reviews, including SRR, PDR, CDR, and PSR, as well as other technical interchanges throughout the program lifecycle.
  • Own and delegate requirements and interface verification with integration and test activities according to company processes to support a successful verification and validation campaign.
  • Use Model-Based Systems Engineering for architecture-to-requirements traceability and interface development in coordination with customers.
  • Own system-level technical budgets.
  • Mentor systems engineers assigned to the team.
  • Support program Risk & Opportunity Management and ERB processes.
