About The Position

Microsoft Quantum is building a topological measurement-based quantum computer, where qubit readout is vital. The Microwave Design and Layout Engineer will design and test the readout system for topological qubits at the component, subsystem, and system levels. The role offers opportunities to grow systems engineering skills, develop microwave engineering expertise, and work on a fast-paced, interdisciplinary team. Work schedules are flexible, with in-office requirements of about three days per week.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; or bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field and at least 2 years of industry or research and development experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency, or other protected status as required to assess eligibility for access to export-controlled information; citizenship will be verified with a valid passport, with other documents available for lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees where applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or a related field; or master's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 3 years of industry or research and development experience; or bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 5 years of industry or research and development experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with filter design.
  • Demonstrated ability with microwave design and layout for PCBs and ICs.
  • Experience with radio-frequency-based measurements.
  • Ability to leverage artificial intelligence tools to drive innovation and efficiency, such as in measurement, performance modeling and analysis, research gathering, and day-to-day task automation.
  • Ability to work in an AI-first environment using modern AI tools to accelerate discovery through hardware development.

Responsibilities

  • Design and test scalable microwave readout circuitry for topological qubits.
  • Interface across teams to codesign the readout system with evolving qubit designs and control requirements, making efficient use of company expertise.
  • Document work; analyze, interpret, and present design results; and participate in opportunities to present to customers and network with peers.
  • Use engineering best practices to build tools and processes that enable progress in quantum research, and help develop tools for internal and external users.
  • Uphold safety standards and practices, comply with policies, follow safety practices in varied work environments, and escalate issues with appropriate urgency; may assist in defining and implementing safety protocols.
  • Embody Microsoft's Culture and Values.
