About The Position

Microsoft Quantum is building a topological measurement-based quantum computer. In this architecture, qubit readout is especially vital. The Microwave Design and Layout Engineer will design and test the readout system for topological qubits at the component, subsystem, and system levels. The role offers opportunities to develop systems engineering skills, deepen microwave engineering expertise, and work in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary team. Work schedules are flexible, with in-office requirements of about three days per week. The engineer will collaborate across teams to codesign a scalable readout system with evolving qubit designs and control requirements. Responsibilities also include documenting and presenting design results, building tools and processes that support quantum research, and upholding safety standards and practices. The role requires a relevant master's degree, a bachelor's degree plus qualifying experience, or equivalent experience. Preferred qualifications include advanced education or experience in physics or engineering, filter design, microwave design and layout for PCBs and ICs, RF-based measurements, and use of AI tools to accelerate hardware development and related work. The position requires Microsoft security screening and verification of citizenship or other qualifying status for access to export-controlled information.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; or bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field and at least 2 years of experience in industry or a research and development environment; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency, or other protected status for eligibility assessment to access export-controlled information; citizenship must be verified with a valid passport, with other applicable documents accepted for lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or a related field; or master's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 3 years of industry or research and development experience; or bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 5 years of such experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with filter design.
  • Demonstrated ability in microwave design and layout for PCBs and ICs.
  • Experience with radio-frequency-based measurements.
  • Ability to use artificial intelligence tools to drive innovation and efficiency, such as for measurement, performance modeling and analysis, research gathering, and day-to-day task automation.
  • Ability to work in an AI-first environment using modern AI tools to accelerate discovery through hardware development.

Responsibilities

  • Design and test scalable microwave readout circuitry for topological qubits.
  • Interface across teams to codesign the readout system with evolving qubit designs and control requirements, while making efficient use of company expertise.
  • Document work; analyze, interpret, and present design results; and participate in opportunities to present to customers and network with peers.
  • Use engineering best practices to build tools and processes that enable progress in quantum research.
  • Incorporate tips and techniques and help develop tools for users to support work internally and externally.
  • Uphold safety standards and practices, including complying with policies, maintaining safety in varied work environments, and escalating issues with appropriate urgency.
  • May assist in defining and implementing safety protocols.
  • Embody Microsoft’s Culture and Values.
