Microwave Design and Layout Engineer

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$102,100 - $219,200

About The Position

Microsoft Quantum is building a topological measurement-based quantum computer, where qubit readout is especially vital. The Microwave Design and Layout Engineer will design and test the readout system for topological qubits at component, subsystem, and system levels. The role offers opportunities to develop systems-engineering skills, deepen microwave-engineering expertise, and work with fast-paced, interdisciplinary teams.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; or bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field plus at least 2 years of industry or research and development experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including a Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency, or other protected status for assessment of eligibility to access export-controlled information; citizenship or status verification is required as described in the posting.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or a related field; or master's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field plus at least 3 years of industry or research and development experience; or bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field plus at least 5 years of such experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with filter design.
  • Experience with radio-frequency measurements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with microwave design and layout for PCBs and ICs.
  • Ability to leverage artificial intelligence tools to drive innovation and efficiency, such as for measurement, performance modeling and analysis, research gathering, and day-to-day task automation.
  • Ability to work in an AI-first environment using modern AI tools to accelerate discovery through hardware development.

Responsibilities

  • Design and test scalable microwave readout circuitry for topological qubits.
  • Interface across teams to codesign the readout system with evolving qubit designs and control requirements, making efficient use of company expertise.
  • Document work; analyze, interpret, and present design results; and participate in customer presentations and peer networking.
  • Use engineering best practices to build tools and processes that enable progress in quantum research; incorporate techniques and help develop tools for internal and external users.
  • Uphold safety standards and practices, comply with policies, follow safety procedures in varied work environments, and escalate issues with appropriate urgency. May assist in defining and implementing safety protocols.
  • Embody Microsoft’s Culture and Values.
