Microwave Design and Layout Engineer

Microsoft•Redmond, WA

About The Position

Microsoft Quantum is building a topological measurement-based quantum computer. In this architecture, qubit readout is especially important. The Microwave Design and Layout Engineer will design and test the readout system for topological qubits at the component, subsystem, and system levels, contributing to a scalable readout system in a multidisciplinary team. The role offers the opportunity to grow as a systems engineer, develop microwave engineering expertise, and work with interdisciplinary teams. The position is part of Microsoft Quantum Engineering at the IC3 level. The engineer will work across teams to codesign the readout system as qubit designs and control requirements evolve, document and present design results, and develop engineering tools and processes that support quantum research. The role also includes upholding safety standards, following applicable policies, and potentially helping define and implement safety protocols. The role requires a Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter. It also requires citizenship or protected-status verification to assess eligibility for access to export-controlled information.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; or bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field and at least 2 years of experience in industry or a research and development environment; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency, or other protected status as required to assess eligibility to access export-controlled information; citizenship will be verified with a valid passport, with other applicable documents permitted for lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or a related field; or master's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 3 years of industry or research and development experience; or bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field and at least 5 years of industry or research and development experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with filter design.
  • Experience with radio-frequency measurements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with microwave design and layout for PCBs and ICs.
  • Ability to leverage artificial intelligence tools to drive innovation and efficiency, such as measurement, performance modeling and analysis, research gathering, and day-to-day task automation.
  • Ability to work in an AI-first environment using modern AI tools to accelerate discovery through hardware development.

Responsibilities

  • Design and test scalable microwave readout circuitry for topological qubits.
  • Interface across teams to codesign the readout system with evolving qubit designs and control requirements, making efficient use of company expertise.
  • Document work; analyze, interpret, and present design results; and participate in opportunities to present to customers and network with peers.
  • Use engineering best practices to build tools and processes that enable progress in quantum research.
  • Incorporate tips and techniques and help develop tools for internal and external users.
  • Uphold safety standards and practices, comply with policies, follow safety practices in varied work environments, and escalate issues with appropriate urgency.
  • May assist in defining and implementing safety protocols.
  • Embody Microsoft's Culture and Values.

Benefits

  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation; specific benefits are not listed in the posting.
