This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of microbiology procedures requiring independent judgment in performing high complexity testing in both manual and automated methods. The specialist will adhere to the laboratory's procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results, and follow established quality control policies. They will be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance and either correct the problem or immediately notify their supervisor. The role may also involve performing testing in other areas of the department, instrument maintenance, reviewing accuracy of patient results, recognizing age-specific differences in expected results, and ensuring proper handling of proficiency testing samples. Additionally, the specialist may be required to perform venipuncture or capillary puncture, assist in the development of laboratory policies, and adhere to all department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, and emergency preparedness. The individual may be assigned responsibility for the operation of the micro department during their shift as Micro Tech in-charge if supervisor is unavailable.
