The Microbiology Specialist performs a wide variety of microbiology procedures requiring independent judgment in performing high complexity testing in both manual and automated methods. This role adheres to the laboratory's procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results, and follows established quality control policies. The specialist is responsible for identifying and correcting problems that may affect test performance, performing and documenting instrument maintenance, and reviewing the accuracy of patient results before release. Additionally, the role recognizes age-specific differences in expected results and ensures proficiency testing samples are handled appropriately. The specialist may also be required to perform venipunctures or capillary punctures, assist in policy development, and adhere to all safety and infection control procedures. In some instances, the specialist may be assigned responsibility for the operation of the micro department during their shift as Micro Tech in-charge.
