The Microbiology Specialist will perform a wide variety of microbiology procedures requiring independent judgment in performing high complexity testing in both manual and automated methods. This role adheres to the laboratory's procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results, and follows established quality control policies. The specialist is responsible for identifying and resolving issues that may affect test performance, performing and documenting instrument maintenance, and reviewing the accuracy of patient results before release. Additionally, the role involves recognizing age-specific differences in expected results, ensuring proficiency testing samples are handled correctly, and potentially performing venipuncture or capillary puncture. The specialist may also assist in developing laboratory policies and procedures, adhere to safety and infection control protocols, and may be assigned responsibility for the operation of the micro department during their shift as Micro Tech in-charge if the supervisor is unavailable.
