About The Position

The Metrology Technician develops, evaluates, and maintains calibration systems and measurement standards to ensure instrumentation meets accuracy and precision requirements. The role covers measurement of base and derived units, including length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, pressure, flow, and velocity, and applies physics, mathematics, and engineering to quantify and minimize measurement uncertainty.

The technician serves as a division expert in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), programs and operates Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), and uses precision inspection equipment. The role also includes analytical testing of raw materials and finished products, quality audits and root cause analysis, support for customer claims, technical direction for engineering and quality teams, and maintenance and repair of production and facility equipment.

This position requires frequent movement throughout plant and laboratory environments, including work at elevated heights and in confined spaces. It requires the ability to frequently lift or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• At least one year of maintenance, skilled trades, or coordinate-measuring experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering blueprints, including GD&T, and electrical and mechanical schematics.

Responsibilities

• Develop, evaluate, and maintain calibration systems and define measurement standards for base and derived units.
• Serve as the division expert in GD&T; program, set up, and operate CMMs and use precision inspection tools such as height gauges, optical comparators, and plug and thread gauges.
• Identify and quantify sources of measurement error, conduct uncertainty analysis, and adjust measurement capabilities to minimize errors.
• Conduct Layered Process Audits and perform root cause analysis using methods such as 5W+1H and 5 Whys.
• Perform analytical tests on raw materials and finished products, including tests for purity, particle size, and hardness.
• Inspect products at job sites to substantiate customer claims and formulate compensation offers.
• Direct engineering, quality, and laboratory teams in designing and selecting approved measurement standards; serve as an internal subject matter expert and represent the organization in industrial standardization committees such as NIST or ISO.
• Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot production and facility equipment, including electrical, mechanical, CNC, PLC, and robot automation; set up and operate metalworking tools and construct physical flow racks as needed.
