About The Position

Incumbents in this position are responsible for participating in the reading of water meters. This position is assigned to pay grade G11. Essential Job Functions Reads meters on an assigned route for billing purposes to include verifying that addresses and meter numbers are correct. Installs and removes meters, determines which meters are salvageable, and repairs meters as assigned. Drive assigned routes in a geographical location getting in and out of vehicle frequently and walking for long distances on parts of route not accessible by vehicle. Install and program Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and Advance Metering Infrastructure (AMI) devices in accordance with company procedures. Investigate, troubleshoot, and replace AMR/AMI devices as required. Turns delinquent accounts off and on. Performs re-reading of meters for billing purposes as necessary to verity meter numbers, addresses, and readings. Performs emergency turn-offs for burst pipes and determines impact of break upon billing. Performs meter maintenance to include inspecting meters, cleaning stuck meters, and making necessary shop repairs. Report meter locations that are hazardous or difficult to read or maintain (e.g., dangerous meter locations, vicious or dangerous animals, abnormal utilities – especially natural gas consumption patterns, gas odors, exposed electrical wiring, open or broken water or gas meter boxes, etc.) to supervisor so that condition can be remedied. Performs other related job duties as assigned. In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Six (6) months of general work experience.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid State of North Carolina driver's license required.
  • Use interpersonal skills such as seeing, hearing, and speaking to develop positive interactions with customers.
  • Comprehends and uses technical or professional language, either written or spoken, to communicate complex ideas.
  • Performs numerical operations using basic counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing.
  • Requires travel between CFPUA sites.
  • Use or repair small/light equipment (power tools).
  • Use or repair medium equipment and machinery (vehicles, commercial mowers).
  • Physical exertion involving pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 20 pounds. May require prolonged standing and/or walking during which time objects are transported. May require occasional bending, squatting, and reaching.
  • Sustained physical activity throughout the work period. Performs work tasks involving pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting up to 50 pounds. May require bending, squatting, stooping, reaching, climbing, or walking in addition to other physical demands.
