About The Position

Install and maintain all types of electric meters energized at any voltage in the shop, stations, switchyards, generating plants, and on customer premises. Install and maintain distribution grid control devices and automated metering and distribution grid network infrastructure. The role involves reading meters, installing, removing, changing, disconnecting, and reconnecting meters. It also includes testing single phase, network, and polyphase self-contained meters for proper operation and accuracy, programming meters, and performing credit and collections related orders such as disconnects and reconnects for non-payment. The position requires investigating irregular usage, energy diversion, and self-contained service power quality problems, including installing event recorders and neutral testers, and producing reports. Work may be performed from ladders and elevated platforms.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in electrical/electronic technology or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant work experience of four years.
  • Qualified backgrounds include substation, metering, instrumentation, controls, power systems, or electrical maintenance, with demonstrated hands-on experience in testing, troubleshooting, and working with electrical equipment.
  • State Driver License.
  • Must possess and maintain a medical certification card, if determined to be required by law.
  • Successfully complete the Company's training and qualification program for this position including: classroom instruction; written examination; job mentoring; and job performance demonstrations (within 24 months of employment for C, within 24 months of promotion for B and A).
  • Work overtime as needed including extended daily shifts and weekends.
  • Work late shifts as needed.
  • Work independently under semi-direct supervision (C) or general supervision (B, A) in a safe-efficient, and productive manner.
  • Proficiently use computers and applications related to this position.
  • Effectively communicate with other employees, customer, and the general public in a courteous and appropriate manner.
  • Promote a positive image of the Company to customer and the general public.
  • Comply with all aspects of the AEP Corporate Code of Conduct.
  • Report hazards and abnormal conditions.
  • Attend and participate in training as assigned and assist in the training of other employees.
  • Ability to walk long distances as determined by the Company (for B and A).
  • Ability to lift a 50-pound weight from the floor to a workbench (for B and A).
  • 24 months as a Meter Electrician C (for B).
  • 24 months as a Meter Electrician B (for A).

  • Examples include roles such as Meter Specialist, Meter Technician, Field Network Technician, or substation field personnel, as well as comparable military or industrial technical training.
