About The Position

Steel Dynamics is offering a metallurgy internship in the Casting Department at its Southwest Sinton Division in Sinton, Texas, during Summer 2027. The internship combines office-based engineering work with hands-on industrial experience. Interns work alongside operators and maintenance teams on the production floor, applying engineering principles to equipment, systems, and processes and seeing the real-world effects of their work.

The intern will support scrap analysis, melt shop operations, recovery and process optimization, casting activities, and quality assurance. The posting describes exposure to the aluminum casting lifecycle, from scrap charging and melting through alloying, dross removal, and coil shipment. Steel Dynamics provides competitive hourly pay and, for eligible interns living more than 50 miles from the work site, furnished housing at no cost.

Requirements

• Be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in Materials Science or Engineering.

Nice To Haves

• A GPA of at least 2.7 is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist with scrap analysis and alloy verification using spectrometry and other laboratory tools to support quality and certification standards.
• Collect and analyze production data, identify yield loss points, and recommend improvements to melt shop efficiency and recovery.
• Participate in scrap recovery and process optimization projects, including developing sorting criteria and tracking melt loss.
• Collaborate with operators, engineers, and laboratory personnel across shifts to support consistent data collection, quality assurance, and process improvements.
• Gain hands-on experience in casting operations, including assisting with heat cycles, transfers, and turnaround tasks.
• Validate laboratory results, support round robin testing, and help ensure compliance with accuracy standards.
