About The Position

Steel Dynamics is a leading industrial metals solutions company that produces lower-carbon, high-quality steel products primarily from recycled scrap. Its operations include steel production, metals recycling, steel fabrication, and aluminum production. The company serves customers across North America and emphasizes innovation, efficiency, and sustainability. The Metallurgy Internship is based in the Casting Department at Steel Dynamics’ Southwest Sinton Division in Sinton, Texas, and takes place during Summer 2027. It combines office-based engineering work with hands-on industrial experience. Interns work alongside operators and maintenance teams on the production floor, applying engineering principles to equipment, systems, and processes. They may develop and test solutions in real production conditions and see the effects of their work. The internship provides experience with metallurgy as both technical analysis and practical production work. Example projects have included scrap and alloy analysis, refining scrap-sorting criteria, mapping scrap flows, measuring melt loss, supporting casting operations, and validating laboratory results. The examples also describe exposure to aluminum casting processes from scrap charging and melting through alloying, dross removal, and coil shipment.
