About The Position

Steel Dynamics is a leading industrial metals solutions company that produces lower-carbon, high-quality steel products primarily from recycled scrap. Its circular manufacturing operations include steel production, metals recycling, steel fabrication, and aluminum production, serving customers across North America. The Metallurgy Internship is based in the Quality Department at Steel Dynamics’ Engineered Bar Products Division in Pittsboro, Indiana, and takes place in Summer 2027. The internship balances office-based engineering work with hands-on industrial experience. Interns work alongside operators and maintenance teams on the production floor, applying engineering principles to equipment, systems, and processes and seeing the results of their work in real-world conditions. Interns assist with laboratory and production analysis and gain exposure to steelmaking, rolling, nondestructive testing (NDT), heat treating, and laboratory operations. Example projects completed by previous interns include characterizing microstructural banding in gear steels, improving heat-treatment and melt processes, evaluating electromagnetic stirrer design and operation, developing grain-refinement techniques, and modeling and measuring cooling curves.
