About The Position

Steel Dynamics is hiring a Metallurgy Intern for Summer 2027 in the Quality Department at its Engineered Bar Products Division in Pittsboro, Indiana. The internship combines office-based engineering work with hands-on industrial experience. Interns work alongside operators and maintenance teams on the production floor, applying engineering principles to equipment, systems, and processes, and may design and test solutions in real-world production conditions. The role provides exposure to how metallurgy supports production success, including steelmaking, rolling, nondestructive testing (NDT), heat treating, and laboratory operations.

Requirements

• Be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in Metallurgical and/or Materials Science or Engineering.

Nice To Haves

• Preferred GPA of at least 2.7.

Responsibilities

• Assist with scrap and steel analysis using spectrometry and other laboratory tools to support quality and efficiency efforts.
• Support steelmaking and rolling operations by collecting and analyzing production data, identifying yield-loss points, and recommending improvements to efficiency and recovery.
• Collaborate with operators, engineers, and laboratory personnel across shifts to support consistent data collection, quality assurance, and process improvements.
• Gain hands-on experience with steelmaking, rolling, NDT, heat treating, and laboratory operations tasks.
