MEP Estimator - Electrical

DPR•Newport Beach, CA

About The Position

The MEP Estimator prepares and manages detailed cost estimates for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems on moderately complex projects. The role applies specialized MEP knowledge to ensure estimate accuracy, feasibility, and value, and coordinates with design and preconstruction teams to assess constructability, evaluate design alternatives, and support overall cost strategy. The position also contributes to estimating standards and continuous improvement in MEP estimating practices. The estimator owns assigned MEP scopes and develops quantity takeoffs and cost estimates across multiple project phases. They review project documents, coordinate and evaluate trade partner bids, support design and constructability reviews, and collaborate with project, estimating, scheduling, operations, and design teams to align estimates with project budgets, logistics, phasing, and sequencing assumptions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering, construction management, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 4–6 years of experience in MEP estimating, design-build coordination, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Own assigned MEP scopes and prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for MEP systems across multiple project phases.
  • Review drawings, specifications, and addenda to identify technical scope requirements and potential conflicts.
  • Prepare bid tabs and scope summaries documenting assumptions, risks, opportunities, and recommendations for internal and client-facing reviews.
  • Perform cost and value analyses to support design development and decision-making.
  • Engage with trade partners to obtain, evaluate, and clarify bids and proposals for MEP scope.
  • Contribute to constructability and value engineering reviews related to system design and integration.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining cost databases and estimating tools for MEP work.
  • Provide guidance to Senior Preconstruction Engineers on takeoffs, scope reviews, and MEP estimating practices.
  • Collaborate with project and estimating teams to ensure MEP estimates align with overall project budgets and strategies.
