About The Position

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108-bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment facility for the psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18 years. Newport News has an on-site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming. The Mental Health Technician (MHT) is an active participant in the implementation of physical care, therapeutic activities, and the academic program. Assist in planning and implementing treatment programs for residents, implements functional behavioral assessment/behavior intervention plans as well as individualized academic or behavioral goals, accommodations, and services as defined by Individualized Instructional Plans (IIPs), Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and 504 Plans. The selected candidate will report directly to the PHP Supervisor within the Clinical Department.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program in an area of human services, which includes, but may not be limited to the following: psychology, sociology, political science, counseling, criminal justice, pastoral counseling, elementary/special education, or family therapy.
  • OR High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) equivalent. PLUS a minimum of 1 year of experience (paid or unpaid) in a human service field. This experience must involve direct contact with the individual receiving services (i.e. coaching, teaching, case management, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a role model to staff and residents in dress and exercises appropriate interventions under the direction of the Program Coordinator, Program Manager and/or Nurse.
  • Reviews the resident’s chart to learn their history and the Initial Treatment Plan. Refers any questions to the Program Coordinator, Program Manager and/or Nurse on duty.
  • Performs proper Handle with Care techniques, demonstrating knowledge of resident and staff safety.
  • Exhibits excellent verbal de-escalation skills.
  • Exercises appropriate interventions under the direction of the Program Coordinator, Program Manager and/or Nurse.
  • Provides appropriate crisis intervention strategies by anticipating and responding quickly to escalating behaviors, utilizing de-escalation techniques to diffuse the situation, correctly prioritizing safety concerns, following proper restraint technique guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
