About The Position

The Mental Health Technician will provide direct and indirect patient care to child and adolescent patients under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Program Therapist. This role involves providing continuous patient care, direct observation/supervision, interaction, and positive role modeling to child and/or adolescent patients in a manner that promotes safety and therapeutic treatment. The technician works with other members of a multi-disciplinary team in facilitating milieu activities such as community meetings, goals, groups, and recreational activities as appropriate to the specified patient population. They will also assist patients with activities of daily living (ADL), maintain patient confidentiality, and comply with HIPAA requirements. The position requires the ability to respond to patients with empathy, possess positive interpersonal skills, recognize potential escalation of behavior, and use appropriate de-escalation skills. The technician must be able to react calmly and therapeutically in a crisis situation and have knowledge of potential risks and safety precautions in the care of mental health patients, including conducting observation checks according to policy and procedure. Reporting patient status, issues, concerns, and behavioral changes to the RN is a key responsibility. The role also involves serving as a role model, providing structure and guidance, exhibiting organizational ability, sound judgment, and initiative, and interacting positively with patients, family members, and the multidisciplinary team. Attendance at staff meetings, trainings, and in-service presentations, along with completion of all mandatory education requirements, is expected. The technician must follow policies and procedures and regulatory agency requirements related to seclusion and/or restraint, and be compliant with the assigned schedule and time and attendance policy. Other duties as assigned or directed may also be performed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
  • BLS required

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology or related degree in a mental health field desired
  • Ability to respond to patients with empathy and with positive interpersonal skills
  • Exhibits organizational ability, sound judgment and initiative

Responsibilities
