Member of Technical Staff Intern, Applied AI

GenMD•Palo Alto, CA
•$45 - $60

About The Position

GenMD is a Stanford spin-off building AI and data infrastructure for healthcare. The company grew out of work at Stanford Medicine and works with health systems and data partners on large longitudinal datasets, including claims, health records, imaging, and clinical notes. It makes this data usable for researchers and frontier AI while protecting patient privacy. GenMD is emerging from stealth, is revenue-generating and well funded, and describes itself as intentionally small and fast-moving. The intern will work on AI and data systems supporting Healthcare Datahub and GenMD’s work with frontier AI teams. From the first week, the intern will take on real problems, have a named mentor, and own projects end to end, from scoping through delivery. Work includes prototyping and shipping LLM features for Mira, GenMD’s AI research assistant; building pipelines that turn raw healthcare datasets into documented, searchable, analysis-ready products; and running experiments and evaluations, with findings presented at a Friday showcase. Spring, summer, and fall terms are available, and start dates are flexible.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in computer science, AI/ML, data science, biomedical informatics, or a related field.
  • Strong Python skills.
  • Experience with LLM APIs, PyTorch, or Hugging Face.
  • Comfort with SQL and messy real-world data.
  • Curious and self-directed, with a preference for shipping work and learning rather than waiting for a perfect specification.

Responsibilities

  • Prototype and ship LLM features for Mira, including dataset matching, cohort exploration, and code generation.
  • Build data pipelines that transform raw healthcare datasets into documented, searchable, analysis-ready products.
  • Run experiments and evaluations, and present findings at the Friday showcase.
  • Own projects end to end, from scoping through delivery.
