About The Position

The Melt Shop Superintendent is responsible for leading melt shop operations to ensure the safe, timely, efficient, and cost-effective production of quality steel products. This position coordinates and schedules department operations with Sales and other operational departments to meet production objectives, maintain product quality, and support overall mill performance. The role requires strong technical knowledge of steelmaking processes, equipment, and technologies, including electric arc furnace (EAF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF), caster operations, refractories, melt shop equipment, and related mill operations. This role sets and communicates departmental goals for production, efficiency, quality, safety, and continuous improvement; manages the department budget; evaluates long- and short-term capital needs; monitors departmental purchases and expenditures; and oversees multiple projects and priorities to ensure efficiency, timeliness, and follow-through. The Melt Shop Superintendent maintains close working relationships with Sales, the rolling mill, the lab, the yard, administration, and other departments; assists with resolving mill issues; supports long-term planning; and promotes a culture of safety, accountability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field preferred; an equivalent combination of education and relevant steelmaking manufacturing experience will be considered.
  • 10+ years of relevant steelmaking experience required, including experience in a melt shop producing at least 300k tons per annum, with part of that experience in a manager or supervisor position.
  • Availability for an on-call 24x7 position, carrying a cell phone and/or pager at all times.
  • Relevant steelmaking experience related to EAF, BOF, caster operations, refractories, and related melt shop equipment and technologies.
  • Proven leadership experience within steelmaking operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of steelmaking processes, equipment, and technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of materials, equipment, operations, policies, and procedures related to melt shop, rolling mill, and overall mill operations.
  • Knowledge of inventory control practices and procedures, budgeting principles, and cost control.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with sound judgment and strong organizational skills and attention to detail, and the ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong written and oral communication, with the ability to manage and motivate others, negotiate effectively, build and maintain effective working relationships, work well in a team environment, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Word and Excel, and ability to learn and effectively use other software specific to CSRM.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence.
  • Ability to support and promote a safe work environment through adherence to company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience leading safety initiatives in a manufacturing, steelmaking, or heavy industrial environment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and applicable environmental, health, and safety requirements.
  • Ability to investigate incidents, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous safety improvements.
  • Experience conducting safety training and promoting a culture of accountability and safe work practices.
  • Compliance with all safety guidelines, including the wearing of protective equipment and clothing at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains safety standards for the department; investigates and reports accidents; implements corrective actions; provides appropriate training; and continually improves processes to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ensures the plant operates at the highest possible safety levels and that safety processes are followed, reinforced, and driven for continuous improvement.
  • Oversees quality control processes, procedures, and documentation, and challenges and encourages employees to identify ways to improve processes and procedures.
  • Coordinates and schedules all department operations in conjunction with Sales and other operational departments to ensure timely, efficient production of product materials and quality steel products.
  • Sets, manages, identifies, and communicates departmental goals for production, efficiency, quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensures department objectives are attained in a timely manner.
  • Develops and maintains the department budget and adherence by evaluating long- and short-term capital needs and monitoring departmental purchases and expenditures.
  • Manages multiple projects and priorities, ensuring efficiency, timeliness, and follow-through.
  • Manages the work of both union and non-union staff; ensures the union contract is followed; ensures appropriate staffing levels; and conducts annual performance reviews for non-union employees.
  • Maintains close working relationships with Sales, the rolling mill, the lab, the yard, administration personnel, and other operational departments.
  • Assists with resolution of problems that arise in the mill and supports projects and development of long-term plans.
  • Maintains up-to-date information and knowledge on all CSRM products.
  • Ensures accurate time records are maintained for employees in E-time.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Supports Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better match the business.
  • Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
