About The Position

Under the general direction of the Pharmacy Manager, the retail pharmacy intern is responsible for performing tasks involved in the preparation and distribution of medications checked by a licensed Pharmacist while under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This role requires a high level of detail orientation and organization, the ability to maintain a clean and orderly pharmacy, and effective communication skills with pharmacy staff. The intern will also be responsible for reporting safety issues and errors, assisting the pharmacist with operational tasks, and performing specific duties related to both inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Currently enrolled and in good standing with an accredited college of pharmacy approved by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy, graduated from an accredited college of pharmacy with registration pending, or in the process of satisfying internship requirements for foreign graduates taking the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NABPLEX).
  • Active Oklahoma licensed intern permit required.
  • License must be in good standing.
  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information.
  • Customer Service oriented.
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures associated with pharmacology.
  • Good communication skills along with the ability to translate technical information into terms the general public can understand.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and assesses medication/IV orders for drug interactions and incompatibilities.
  • Reviews medication/IV orders for appropriateness based on age, patient/family expectations, and healthcare provider input.
  • Provides clinical interventions through communication with physicians, nurses, other healthcare professionals, and patients.
  • Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile products using aseptic technique.
  • Receives and inputs new discharge patient medication orders into pharmacy management software.
  • Completes patient prescriptions from start to finish: input, fill/package, and deliver.
  • Prepares adherence packaged discharge patient medications under preceptor supervision.
  • Assists the pharmacist on duty to answer clinical questions regarding medication use.
  • Places properly packaged medication in labeled containers for verification by a Doctor of Pharmacy, subsequent to verified order entry.
  • Weighs, measures, and mixes drugs and other medicinal compounds, and fills bottles or capsules with the correct quantity and composition.
  • Stores and preserves biologicals, vaccines, serums, and other drugs subject to deterioration, utilizing refrigeration and other methods.
  • Helps maintain a clean and orderly pharmacy.
  • Maintains a high level of professionalism at all times, including attendance and phone etiquette.
  • Responsible for reporting safety issues and errors in a timely manner to a supervisor.
  • Assists the pharmacist on duty with tasks necessary for the operation of the pharmacy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
