About The Position

Den Herder Veterinary Hospital, a premier AAHA-accredited practice in Waterloo, IA, is seeking an experienced veterinarian to join their team as a Medical Lead. This role combines hands-on clinical medicine with meaningful medical leadership, focusing on championing medical quality, strengthening clinical standards, and fostering a thriving environment. The Medical Lead will remain predominantly clinical, practicing high-quality medicine across various areas including wellness, diagnostics, dentistry, surgery, internal medicine, urgent care, and complex case management. They will also serve as a clinical champion, guiding medical protocols, promoting consistency in patient care, encouraging collaboration among doctors, and partnering with hospital leadership on clinical workflows and quality initiatives. The hospital offers a robust small-animal caseload with opportunities to work with a well-established exotic caseload, and provides significant support for continued growth, including a yearly CE allowance, paid days off, and access to a Clinical Tracks Program with complimentary RACE-approved CE. Requirements

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree
A valid state license and in good standing to practice
A collaborative spirit and a dedication to practicing the highest standard of medicine
Excellent communication skills with a positive, friendly attitude
Interest in small-animal general practice in an AAHA-accredited hospital offering comprehensive preventative care, wellness, dentistry, surgery, senior pet care, urgent/same-day cases, end-of-life care, and compassionate client communication
Experience in veterinary medicine
Experience in medical leadership or a desire to transition into it

Nice To Haves

Experience with exotics is absolutely not required, but the opportunity is here for a veterinarian who would like to learn, expand an existing interest, or bring their own exotic experience to the team.
Experience serving in a Medical Lead or Medical Director capacity

Responsibilities

Practice high-quality, compassionate medicine across wellness, diagnostics, dentistry, surgery, internal medicine, urgent care, and complex case management
Independently manage a broad and engaging caseload with strong clinical judgment
Build lasting client relationships through thoughtful communication and individualized treatment planning
Lead by example on the hospital floor through excellent medicine, teamwork, professionalism, and patient advocacy
Continue developing your own clinical interests and areas of expertise
Serve as a trusted clinical resource and champion of medical excellence within the hospital
Help guide medical standards, protocols, and consistency of patient care
Encourage collaboration and thoughtful discussion among the doctor team
Partner with hospital leadership on clinical workflows, medical equipment, and quality initiatives
Support a culture of accountability, communication, continuous learning, and exceptional medicine
Help shape the hospital's continued clinical growth and future direction
