The Medical Laboratory Technician applies general and department-specific laboratory policies and procedures, follows regulatory guidelines, and reviews policy changes. The technician works independently with little or no supervision, assesses situations and determines appropriate actions, and may assume tech-in-charge responsibilities by directing staff activities or functions. The role includes demonstrating and maintaining competency in designated laboratory sections, completing proficiency testing and required training, participating in continuing education, and helping with general laboratory duties such as receiving specimens and putting away supplies. The technician organizes daily work, troubleshoots instrument issues, documents corrective actions, and performs repairs when needed. The role also involves investigating specimen collection problems using the Outstanding Specimen Report and specimen tracking tools when appropriate; performing and documenting quality control, preventive maintenance, and equipment safety checks; and training new employees or students. The technician must communicate appropriately with patients and staff and follow laboratory policies related to the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals, including critical-call read-back and patient identification.
