About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS/MT) is responsible for obtaining, processing, and analyzing patient specimens to generate accurate diagnostic laboratory data. This role ensures strict compliance with laboratory policies, quality standards, and regulatory requirements, identifies abnormal results requiring Pathologist review, and delivers professional, patient-centered care.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited MLT/CLS or MT/MLS program required.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Applied Science, or a chemical, physical, or biological science discipline.
  • Active ASCP or AMT certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • One to three (1–3) months of related laboratory experience or training.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, receive, process, analyze, and report accurate laboratory specimen results.
  • Perform diagnostic testing across Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Blood Gas, and Phlebotomy.
  • Demonstrate phlebotomy proficiency across all patient age groups (neonatal through geriatric).
  • Screen test requests for medical necessity requirements and adhere to reference laboratory and interface protocols.
  • Perform drug screening and Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) according to client-specific requirements.
  • Perform and document Quality Control (QC) procedures following quality assurance guidelines.
  • Recognize abnormal test results and escalate critical values to the Pathologist when required.
  • Safely operate, monitor, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control practices, universal precautions, and safety regulations.
  • Adhere to hospital policies and regulatory standards, including IDPH, OSHA, CMS, HIPAA, and DHHS.
  • Uphold patient confidentiality and ethical standards at all times.
  • Communicate respectfully and professionally with patients, families, providers, and staff.
  • Adapt to shifting workloads to ensure all duties are completed within scheduled shifts.
  • Complete required continuing education, participate in staff meetings/in-services, and review departmental updates.
  • Promote teamwork and participate in organizational quality and culture initiatives.
