About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs and evaluates complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological analyses and communicates test results as appropriate. The role also supports patient registration and lab order entry, blood collection, specimen handling, clinical laboratory testing, equipment maintenance, quality control and assurance, accreditation and proficiency testing, and drug and alcohol collection and consortium management.

Requirements

• Associate's degree in a related field.
• Obtain one of the listed credentials within one year: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) (ASCP), Medical Technologist (MT) (AMT), Medical Technologist (MT) (ASCP), or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) (AMT).

Responsibilities

• Register patients and enter laboratory orders into the lab computer system.
• Perform routine and complex blood collection procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures.
• Verify patient identification and specimen labeling.
• Perform clinical laboratory testing using standard techniques and equipment to support disease treatment and diagnosis.
• Store and label specimens and use manual and automatic equipment to prepare specimens and perform analytical tests.
• Perform testing accurately, safely, and within established time periods.
• Calibrate, clean, and maintain test equipment and maintain laboratory supply inventory.
• Perform quality control and quality assurance procedures to comply with internal and external regulations and protocols; evaluate the acceptability of department testing.
• Participate in accreditation and proficiency testing and annual performance competencies.
• Perform drug and alcohol collection procedures and manage random drug and alcohol consortiums.
• Communicate test results as appropriate.
