About The Position

The Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) performs routine testing on blood, tissue, and other body specimens and provides physicians with quality results using clinical laboratory equipment. The role requires a thorough understanding of patient safety and laboratory techniques to protect patient safety and anonymity. The position is at Mary Immaculate Hospital in the Core Lab and is scheduled for 20 hours per week on the evening shift.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, Biology, or Biochemistry through a CLIA-approved program.
• MLS Medical Lab Scientist certification, or eligibility for certification through a nationally recognized certification agency; ASCP is preferred.
• Ability to provide quality, error-free work in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to engage with staff and patients in a professional manner.

Nice To Haves

• Completion of an externship program.
• Certification through ASCP is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform analytical tests on biological specimens in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner in compliance with documented laboratory procedures.
• Determine specimen acceptability through visual inspection or recognition of abnormal or unusual results.
• Recognize factors that may affect measurements and results, and take appropriate action according to protocols.
• Perform quality control for all testing and ensure established ranges are met before releasing patient results.
• Maintain a safe and efficient work environment by checking equipment, cleaning the work area, monitoring temperatures in accordance with hospital policies, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
