About The Position

The Medical Interpreter provides medical and general interpreting services in Spanish for patients and guests with limited English proficiency. The position may be full-time or part-time. The interpreter works with the Dispatcher to ensure requests are addressed in a timely manner, supports culturally and linguistically appropriate communication between English-speaking employees and patients or guests, and documents interpretation activities in accordance with departmental guidelines.

Requirements

• High school graduate or GED.
• Successful completion of Medical Terminology and Medical Interpretation Training.
• At least one year of experience interpreting in a healthcare environment.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish, with strong verbal and written skills in both languages.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, assignments, and deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to exercise good judgment, tact, and diplomacy.
• Ability to manage timeline conflicts.

Nice To Haves

• Associate or bachelor's degree.
• Viable candidates may be asked to successfully complete a medical interpretation competency assessment.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical and general interpreting services in Spanish for patients and guests with limited English proficiency.
• Collaborate with the Dispatcher to ensure medical interpreter requests are met in a timely manner.
• Assist English-speaking employees in communicating with limited-English-proficient patients and guests in culturally and linguistically appropriate styles and behaviors.
• Follow the medical interpreter Code of Ethics during encounters with staff and patients or guests.
• Record and document interpretation activities according to departmental guidelines, noting staff or patient concerns and issues related to risk-management directives or hospital-policy violations.
• Manage multiple tasks, assignments, deadlines, and timeline conflicts.
• Be available to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
