About The Position

The Spanish Medical Interpreter provides accurate and complete interpretation of medical information between providers and patients. The interpreter supports direct communication by serving as a conduit rather than the focus of the exchange, and interprets comments with equal sensitivity to patient and caregiver concerns. The role also assists with Interpreter Program operations, including timely and accurate documentation of interpreter encounters in EPIC. The employee follows medical interpreting standards of practice and code of ethics, and completes the YNHH Interpreter Certification Program within one year of employment.

Requirements

• High school diploma required.
• At least one year of medical interpreting experience required.
• Fluency in English and a foreign language, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work as part of a team and with limited supervision.
• Ability to accurately enter data in Epic and the Language Services System.
• Basic knowledge of medical vocabulary in at least two languages.
• YNHH Interpreter Certification Program required within one year of employment.
• National certification of medical interpreters required within 18 months of employment; required for Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Korean.

Nice To Haves

• Associate degree with a concentration in language, communication, or an allied medical field.
• Experience in a healthcare or hospital setting.
• Experience handling a variety of customers at all socioeconomic levels.
• Ability to enter and retrieve data from EMR systems such as Epic and Meditech.

Responsibilities
