Medical Device Engineering Intern

Axoft•Cambridge, MA

About The Position

Axoft is seeking an undergraduate Engineering Intern to support the assembly and preparation of medical devices for verification and validation (V&V) activities. The intern will work hands-on with engineers and technical team members to assemble prototype and test devices, follow detailed work instructions and procedures, document work, and help ensure test articles are consistently built and ready for evaluation. The role offers an opportunity to learn how electromechanical engineering, manufacturing, quality, and regulatory requirements come together in medical-device development. The internship is preferably six months, with the possibility of a shorter term. A full-time schedule of 40 hours per week is preferred, with the possibility of part-time work. The stated starting period is Winter 2026.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with small, fragile components and hand tools.
  • Prior exposure to maker-space, laboratory, manufacturing, or project-based environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures accurately.
  • Familiarity with common laboratory and prototyping tools, with hands-on experience in at least some areas such as 3D printing, laser cutting, machining, soldering, or basic electrical test equipment.
  • Experience reading mechanical or engineering drawings, or assembly instructions.
  • Ability to perform precision-oriented work while maintaining consistent quality and repeatability.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively in a collaborative engineering environment.
  • Good organizational and documentation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Availability for a six-month internship.
  • Experience assembling and troubleshooting simple electromechanical systems.
  • Experience using precision tools such as torque drivers, tweezers, cutters, microscopes, or inspection equipment.
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturing (DFM) principles.
  • Hands-on experience with electronics prototyping platforms such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar systems.
  • Experience with CAD tools such as Onshape, SolidWorks, Creo, or similar.
  • Exposure to medical devices, biotech, semiconductor fabrication, cleanroom environments, or other highly controlled laboratory or manufacturing environments.
  • Previous experience working under formal procedures or quality-controlled processes.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble medical-device components, subassemblies, and test articles using engineering drawings, work instructions, and assembly procedures.
  • Perform precision assembly operations such as fastening, fixturing, alignment, bonding, and connector assembly.
  • Inspect components and assemblies using basic measurement and inspection equipment, including calipers, microscopes, and gauges.
  • Inspect incoming components and completed assemblies against defined requirements and document the results.
  • Maintain accurate records of assembly activities, measurements, observations, and test-article identification, and report deviations according to established procedures.
  • Follow controlled procedures and documentation practices appropriate to a regulated medical-device environment.
  • Maintain component and test-article traceability and ensure the correct drawing, procedure, and device configuration are used for each build.
  • Record build information and test-article identifiers in spreadsheets or electronic databases.
  • Use 3D printers (FDM and SLA), laser cutting, CNC machining, and other prototyping methods to help prepare test articles, fixtures, tooling, and materials for V&V activities.
  • Identify assembly issues, defects, or unexpected behavior and communicate them to the engineering team.
  • Help maintain organized workspaces, tools, materials, and inventory needed for ongoing testing activities.
  • Identify opportunities to make assembly processes more repeatable, efficient, and robust.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, Pre-Clinical, and other cross-functional teams as needed.
