About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Nursing Manager, the Medical Assistant provides both clinical and administrative support within Student Health Services at San Diego State University. The position plays a key role in delivering high-quality, student-centered healthcare by assisting medical providers with routine clinical procedures, patient care activities, and health center operations. The Medical Assistant performs a broad range of clinical duties within scope of practice, including preparing patients for examinations, collecting and recording vital signs, administering medications and immunizations, performing basic diagnostic tests, and assisting practitioners during medical procedures. The role also includes maintaining exam rooms, handling medical equipment, and supporting infection control standards. In addition, the incumbent supports front-office and administrative functions such as patient check-in, appointment scheduling, maintaining electronic health records, coordinating patient flow, and ensuring compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations. The position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented healthcare environment. This role contributes to the overall mission of Student Health Services by promoting accessible, inclusive, and compassionate care that supports student well-being and academic success. In this role, the Coordinator will: Support healthcare providers in delivering clinical care, including patient preparation, vital sign collection, and assisting with procedures Administer medications and immunizations under supervision and perform routine diagnostic tests Maintain clean, organized, and fully stocked clinical spaces in accordance with safety and infection control standards Provide administrative support including scheduling, patient check-in, and medical record management Coordinate patient flow and communicate effectively with students, providers, and campus partners Ensure patient confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and applicable regulations

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Progressively responsible professional experience with demonstrated evidence of administrative and clinical capability and the talent to carry out the responsibilities of this position.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills, with the ability to interact effectively with students, the public, and colleagues in a professional setting.
  • Proficiency in administrative and clinical systems, including practice management software, electronic health records, multi-line phone systems, and basic Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, email).
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating adaptability to changing assignments and accuracy in processing detailed information (e.g., names, numbers, and records).
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality, particularly in handling sensitive patient information and clinical or clerical tasks of moderate complexity.
  • Ability to independently perform and troubleshoot routine clerical procedures, including applying policies and procedures, identifying errors, and resolving issues efficiently.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate office procedures and information clearly, including explaining policies and responding to routine inquiries.
  • Current AED/CPR Certification

Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical support duties such as phlebotomy, specimen collection, TB testing, and basic diagnostic procedures

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record system
