About The Position

At Stony Brook Medicine, Medical Assistants provide clinical, laboratory, and clerical support in a hospital setting. They assist physicians and other medical personnel with patient care, prepare patients for procedures and examinations, record vital patient data, and perform routine laboratory procedures such as phlebotomy, specimen collection, and specimen processing. They also provide support by greeting and directing patients, producing reports, answering telephones, and gathering and entering data. This is a nonsupervisory position in which clinical duties are performed at least 50% of the time according to prescribed procedures. Medical Assistants work under the direct supervision and guidance of nursing personnel. Supervisors instruct staff in special procedures and techniques, review work, and provide direction. Abnormal findings are referred to a supervisor for review and further intervention. Medical Assistants share pertinent patient-care information with physicians and nursing personnel and summon assistance during emergencies. They do not perform duties requiring professional judgment, critical thinking, assessment, or skilled care. The position is part of New York's Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) Program. During the program, the position may be filled through a noncompetitive appointment without an examination, provided candidates meet the title's minimum qualifications. Temporary appointments may be made; the posting describes a potential transition to permanent noncompetitive status and, later, competitive status under the program. The position may be designated essential, requiring staff to remain at or report to work during institutional emergencies. Hospital positions may be subject to changes in pass days and shifts. Respiratory protection may be required, which may prohibit facial hair. Before starting, the selected candidate must complete a pre-employment physical and medical clearance, an electronic reference check with at least three professional references, a four-panel drug screen, regulatory pre-employment screenings, and provide copies of required New York State licenses or certificates.
