About The Position

Assists in the delivery of health care and patient care management. This role involves preparing patients for examinations, taking vital signs, administering medications and treatments, and maintaining medical equipment and records. The Medical Assistant will also act as a liaison between patients and physicians, provide patient education, and handle administrative tasks such as scheduling outside testing and obtaining pre-authorizations. The position requires adherence to compliance requirements, including OSHA and HIPAA, and involves potential exposure to bio-hazardous materials and medicinal preparations in a fast-paced medical office environment. Travel to other locations may be required.

Requirements

  • CMA or RN Degree
  • Two years experience in a medical office.
  • Knowledge of medical practices to assist in giving patient care.
  • Knowledge of examination and diagnostic procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Knowledge of different insurance company requirements with regard to laboratory handling and billing, including appropriate co-payments.
  • Skill in assisting in a variety of medical procedures, treatments, and medication protocols.
  • Skill in taking vital signs.
  • Skill in maintaining clear notes and imputing correct data in patients’ electronic health records.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, other staff, and the public.
  • Skill in using computers.
  • Skill in using calculator.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the department.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness.

  • Skill in training new Medical Assistants in office operation and procedures.
  • Commute to other locations when MA assistance is needed.

  • Follows compliance requirements pertaining to collection and handling of laboratory specimens including, but not exclusive of, collection, temperature, containers and proper disposal of biohazard materials.
  • Follows guidelines for maintaining patient and corporate confidentiality.

  • Identifies, reports and/or prevents any fraudulent or unethical behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Checks patient electronic health record for physician's notes, lab work, X-ray reports, and other outside reports before taking the patient to the exam room.
  • Prepares patients for examination and treatment, including taking brief histories and vital signs, and reviewing pre-visit information for accuracy.
  • Compiles patient's list of medications.
  • Assists with procedures such as Iovera, injections, aspirations, and ultrasound.
  • Administers and documents routine immunizations.
  • Prepares patients by ordering X-rays or other procedures as determined by physician's notes.
  • Gives injections, performs phlebotomy, and fits patients with orthopedic appliances, splints, and dressings.
  • Follows protocols in the care and maintenance of medical equipment.
  • Prepares exam rooms with necessary instruments and supplies.
  • Schedules patients for outside testing.
  • Obtains pre-authorization for MRIs and other patient outside diagnostic tests.
  • Returns calls to patients per Physician request.
  • Follows medication refill protocols when checking RX request voicemail.
  • Acts as the liaison between triage, call center, and the physicians.
  • Instructs patients on self-injection techniques and proper exercise methods.
  • Provides patients with educational information per Physician approval.
  • Identifies insurance types to prepare lab specimens and requisition forms for appropriate labs.
  • Accesses CRISP to run and print PDMP reports for physicians when refills of Opioids and/or benzodiazepines are requested.
  • Remains current with policies mandated by Federal and local governments, Medicare/Medicaid programs, and other private healthcare programs regarding handling of laboratory work.
  • Assists in the training of new Medical Assistants.
  • Travels to other locations when coverage is needed.
  • Handles Covid immunization and inventory of Covid Vaccine, and keeps up with Protocol.
  • Serves as a chaperone when requested.
  • Uploads US images to Medstrat.
  • Follows compliance requirements mandated by OSHA.
  • Follows compliance requirements pertaining to collection and handling of laboratory specimens.
  • Follows guidelines for maintaining patient and corporate confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to honest and responsible corporate conduct.
  • Identifies, reports and/or prevents any fraudulent or unethical behavior.
