About The Position

The Court and Justice Services (CJS) Division provides a wide range of resolution and court services for people involved in legal disputes. In collaboration with the courts of Alberta, Court and Justice Services provide various programs and services including educating and helping Albertans finding solutions for legal issues, navigating the court system, offering programs at no cost or a nominal charge, and administrative support to all courts in Alberta. The Civil Mediation Program has an exciting opportunity for a seasoned mediator with a passion for adult learning and experience in training others to develop and deliver a training program for new roster mediators, ensuring the highest quality of service to Albertans.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of mediation theory and practice, including conflict dynamics and high-conflict behaviors.
  • Understanding of mentorship models, coaching techniques, and adult learning principles.
  • Strong project management, curriculum development, and instructional design skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly using plain language.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
  • Professional demeanor and commitment to service excellence.
  • A minimum of 180 hours of Mediation, and/or Alternative Dispute Resolution, and/or Conflict Resolution training is required.
  • Completion of one of the following: Bachelor of Social Work with some related experience, OR Master of Social Work (no experience required), OR Related University Degree (e.g. Education, Dispute Resolution/Conflict Management, Social Work, etc.) and 2 years related experience; OR Related Diploma and 3 years related experience; OR Related Certificate and 4 years related experience.
  • Related experience includes: Experience using an interest-based, facilitative model in mediations.
  • Experience with co-mediation models, practical experience working in structured or court connected programs.
  • Experience teaching, coaching, or instructing in a mediation training program or a similar learning environment.
  • Experience developing training materials, facilitator guides and assessment tools.
  • Experience with group facilitation, including managing diverse learning styles, and virtual/in-person delivery formats.

Nice To Haves

  • A professional designation as a mediator (e.g., Qualified Mediator (Q. Med), Chartered Mediator (C. Med)) or an equivalent recognized credential.
  • Experience working in court-connected civil claims mediation.
  • Train-the-Trainer certification or equivalent adult education/facilitation training.
  • Experience applying culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches when working with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Teams) and Zoom.

Responsibilities

  • Developing a training program for new civil mediators joining the roster Mentorship Program.
  • Creating adaptable training plans and supporting materials that address diverse learning styles and developmental needs.
  • Collaborating with experienced mediators, mentors, and program stakeholders to ensure training reflects best practices and program goals.
  • Delivering virtual training sessions and workshops focused on mediation competencies.
  • Scheduling and coordinating training session dates with mentees.
  • Assisting in evaluating the effectiveness of training programs based on feedback and outcomes.
  • Maintaining records of participant progress and program results.
  • Assisting with development of recruitment materials, role-play scenarios, and role-player training.
  • Consulting with supervisors for program planning and review.
