Learn more about the amazing research and work we do at TRIUMF. https://www.discoverourlab.triumf.ca http://www.rarestdrug.com Overview The Mechanical Engineering Technologist Co-op provides hands-on engineering support for the design, construction, commissioning, and maintenance of mechanical systems at TRIUMF. This role focuses on working with existing systems and contributing to the development of an asset management database to monitor, plan, and document preventive maintenance tasks and repairs. The successful candidate will: Build a comprehensive database of TRIUMF’s mechanical equipment. Investigate maintenance requirements based on manufacturer recommendations, maintenance history, and engineering input. Develop standardized work instructions for maintenance activities. Participate in repair and troubleshooting tasks as needed. TRIUMF operates a complex, 24/7 high-tech facility, offering exceptional opportunities for continuous learning and exposure to advanced infrastructure. Due to the nature of the work, this position is primarily on-site.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology program at a recognized institution.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
  • Experience commissioning and maintaining mechanical systems.
  • Practical, hands-on knowledge of HVAC, compressed air, water conditioning, and related systems.
  • Familiarity with building control systems and PLC controls.
  • Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability, sound engineering judgment, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Designation as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker (training provided).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with nuclear ventilation or radioactive water systems is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform functional tests on mechanical systems.
  • Develop preventive maintenance programs to meet regulatory and asset health requirements.
  • Lead or support continuous improvement initiatives, including equipment standardization, work instruction development, and safety enhancements.
  • Assist in developing strategies for digital control systems.
  • Contribute to the development and review of design standards for existing and new mechanical systems.
  • Build a comprehensive database of TRIUMF’s mechanical equipment.
  • Investigate maintenance requirements based on manufacturer recommendations, maintenance history, and engineering input.
  • Develop standardized work instructions for maintenance activities.
