Mechanical/Thermal Principal Engineer-Data Center IT Rack Solutions

Dell Technologies•TX, TX
•$152,000 - $209,000

About The Position

Mechanical Engineering leads and delivers innovative, compliant mechanical design solutions. The team conducts analysis, feasibility studies, and testing of mechanical products, instruments, subassemblies, and packaging for new and existing products, and oversees the introduction of design changes into manufacturing. As a Mechanical Principal Engineer, you will own complex mechanical designs, conduct detailed analyses, and prepare test plans to validate function, reliability, and compliance. You will coordinate with manufacturing and resolve build issues. Based in Round Rock, Texas, you will work on the Mechanical Engineering team developing customer-centric data center infrastructure and high-density rack solutions. The role includes mechanical and thermal design for air- and liquid-cooled systems, concept evaluation, and collaboration with suppliers and internal teams to take designs from concept through production.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in electro-mechanical product development or equivalent skill.
  • Background in air and liquid cooling technologies, with emphasis on liquid cooling and rack-level thermal components.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as Creo or SolidWorks for designing sheet metal, plastics, and die-cast components.
  • Ability to interpret technical data sheets.
  • Firm understanding of FEA tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Secondary degree in Mechanical or Thermal Engineering.
  • Experience designing high-density IT rack solutions for data centers.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with cross-functional engineering teams to develop innovative, customer-centric data center infrastructure and high-density rack solutions.
  • Design and develop mechanical and thermal components for air- and liquid-cooled systems, using 3D CAD tools to create sheet metal, plastic, die-cast, and complex assemblies.
  • Develop, prototype, and evaluate concepts for feasibility, performance, reliability, and manufacturability, using engineering analysis tools such as FEA where appropriate.
  • Interpret technical specifications and supplier documentation to support design decisions and optimize thermal, mechanical, and system-level performance.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, manufacturing, quality, and tooling teams to move designs from concept through production while improving scalability, serviceability, and cost efficiency.
  • Conduct detailed analyses and prepare test plans to validate function, reliability, and compliance.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing and resolve build issues.
