Mechanical Principal Engineer-Data Center IT Rack Feasibility

Dell Technologies•Round Rock, TX
•$152,000 - $209,000

About The Position

The Mechanical Principal Engineer will lead complex mechanical designs and feasibility investigations for data center IT rack solutions. The role involves interpreting technology collateral, technical specifications, and supplier documentation; conducting selective detailed analyses; and preparing test plans to validate function, reliability, and compliance. The engineer will coordinate with downstream stakeholders to support product requirements during early feasibility work. The position is part of Dell Technologies’ Mechanical Engineering team within the Infrastructure Solutions Group. The team develops innovative, compliant mechanical design solutions and conducts feasibility studies and preliminary testing for mechanical products, instruments, and subassemblies. The role focuses on customer-centric data center infrastructure and high-density rack solutions, including mechanical and thermal components for air- and liquid-cooled systems. Work locations are Round Rock, Texas, or Hopkinton, Massachusetts; relocation assistance is available.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in electro-mechanical product development or equivalent skill.
  • Experience with air- and liquid-cooling technologies.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools such as Creo or SolidWorks for mechanical component design.
  • Strong understanding of finite element analysis and interpretation of technical specifications and data sheets.
  • Experience driving complex, fast-paced product development programs.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience designing high-density data center infrastructure, including information technology rack solutions for enterprise environments.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with cross-functional engineering teams to develop innovative, customer-centric data center infrastructure and high-density rack solutions.
  • Design and develop mechanical and thermal components for air- and liquid-cooled systems, using 3D CAD tools to create sheet metal, plastic, die-cast, and complex assemblies.
  • Design, develop, prototype, and evaluate concepts for feasibility, performance, reliability, and manufacturability, using engineering analysis tools such as FEA where appropriate.
  • Interpret technical specifications and supplier documentation to support design decisions and optimize thermal, mechanical, and system-level performance.
  • Collaborate with and influence technology partners, suppliers, manufacturing, quality, and tooling teams to create robust designs and improve scalability, serviceability, and cost efficiency.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and preliminary testing of mechanical products, instruments, and subassemblies for new products and technologies.
  • Prepare test plans to validate function, reliability, and compliance.
  • Coordinate with downstream stakeholders to support product requirements during early feasibility investigations.

Benefits
