Mechanical Estimator

Tutor Perini Corporation•Evansville, IN

About The Position

Frontier-Kemper-Lake Shore division, a Tutor Perini Company, is seeking a Mechanical Estimator to join its office in Evansville, Indiana. The role develops accurate, competitive, and complete cost estimates for mechanical systems—including hoists and ventilation fans—supporting underground mining and underground heavy operations. The Mechanical Estimator leads estimating from early concept through final bid proposal and works with engineering, operations, procurement, and project management to define scope, validate constructability, quantify work, and evaluate risk. The position covers conceptual, preliminary, and definitive estimates for underground mechanical systems, including applicable CAPEX and OPEX. It supports bid strategy, value engineering, constructability review, proposal development, schedule integration, and the transition of awarded work to project teams. The role also maintains historical cost information, benchmarks, and lessons learned to improve future estimates. Frontier-Kemper specializes in heavy civil construction and underground mine development, including engineering and construction of deep shafts and tunnels. Its FKC-Lake Shore division provides design, build, and installation services for hoisting and vertical conveyance systems.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least 5 years of project estimating experience, preferably in underground mining or a heavy industrial environment with significant mechanical scope.
  • At least 10 years in engineering, project planning, and/or project management, with demonstrated ability to align estimate scope with execution strategy.
  • Proven experience producing estimates for underground mechanical work packages, including labor and equipment build-ups and indirect cost modeling.
  • Ability to interpret and apply mechanical drawings, P&IDs, layouts, specifications, and vendor data.
  • Ability to interpret and apply contract requirements, including commercial terms, scope boundaries, alternates, and unit rates.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, safety requirements, and work constraints.
  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD, Excel (including cost models, pivot tables, lookups, rate builds, and scenario analysis), and Project or similar.
  • Ability to work independently on multiple assignments and balance priorities relative to customer deliverables.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mining Engineering (strongly preferred).
  • Underground mining or heavy industrial estimating experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare conceptual, preliminary, and definitive estimates for underground mining mechanical systems scope, including CAPEX/OPEX as applicable.
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from drawings, models, and specifications for mechanical packages.
  • Develop pricing for labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, indirect costs, temporary systems, logistics, and commissioning/start-up support.
  • Solicit and analyze vendor and subcontractor quotes, ensuring alignment with scope, schedule, and site constraints.
  • Build and validate project-based deliverables and maintain historical databases and records to streamline future processes.
  • Lead estimating inputs for underground mechanical installations, including hoisting systems, piping, pumping/dewatering, ventilation components, compressed air, process/mechanical equipment, material handling, and ancillary systems.
  • Lead estimating inputs for fabrication and installation planning, temporary works, and construction support systems.
  • Identify and price risk, contingency, allowances, and exclusions; document estimate basis and assumptions.
  • Participate in bid strategy, value engineering, and constructability reviews with customers, operations, and engineering.
  • Support proposal development, including clarifications, scope narratives, estimate summaries, and bid close packages.
  • Collaborate with project planning and controls to integrate schedule assumptions and sequencing into estimates.
  • Maintain and improve historical cost databases, benchmarking, and lessons learned for underground mechanical work.
  • Support handoff to project teams after award, including estimate validation, budget setup, and change/trend alignment.
