Mechanical Engineering Co-Op Spring 2027

Halo•Cambridge, MA
•Onsite

About The Position

Halo is a hair technology company developing a robotic hair-braiding system that combines computer vision, robotics, compliant fiber manipulation, and mechatronic machines. The system is designed to collaborate with professional stylists and help reduce braiding appointments from hours to minutes. Halo is moving from research and development into salon deployment. The Spring 2027 Mechanical Engineering Co-op will contribute to developing the robotic hair-braiding system. This is an onsite, full-time position at Halo’s office and lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.

Requirements

  • Have at least one semester remaining in an undergraduate or graduate degree.
  • Have experience with CAD; Halo uses Onshape, and experience with Solidworks or an equivalent is acceptable.
  • Have experience with rapid prototyping methods such as 3D printing or CNC.
  • Demonstrate design intelligence, mechanical intuition, creative problem solving, and strong attention to detail.
  • Be willing to fail and learn.
  • Be authorized to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Have completed and documented the design process for a project, through school or independently.
  • Have strong documentation skills and the ability to convey complex ideas in a team setting.
  • Have strong experimental rigor and a testing process.
  • Have experience with complex CAD models and clear top-down design.
  • Have experience with consumer electronics, robotics, or hair styling tools.
  • Have an interest in hair braiding or styling.
  • Have an interest in robotics and mechanisms.
  • Have complementary engineering experience with mechanisms, mechatronics, and moving components.
  • Have experience with design optimization using FEA/CFD simulation.
  • Have experience with electronics prototyping and soldering.
  • Be user-centric and interested in building products people use and love.
  • Have a low-ego, adaptable, and collaborative spirit.
  • Be willing to learn through fast-paced iteration and feedback.
  • Be passionate and driven by innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of complex technology, product sub-assemblies, and test rigs.
  • Take an active, hands-on role in resolving engineering problems thoroughly.
  • Use rapid prototyping technologies to build, test, and iterate.
  • Validate designs during development using hand calculations, computer simulation, and/or lab-based testing.
  • Conduct user testing and communicate the voice of the customer back into the design.
  • Conduct testing, problem solving, and design iteration.

Benefits

  • Company-subsidized parking or commute for onsite employees.
