About The Position

Multiply Labs is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Co-op/Intern for a full-time position in San Francisco, starting in January 2027. The role focuses on designing robotic cartridges and consumables used in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical products. The intern will work with a cross-functional hardware and software team on current and future generations of robotic consumables, contributing from technology and component selection through design, prototyping, testing, iteration, and production. Success requires first-principles engineering, strong documentation, and the ability to move ideas into action while coordinating with colleagues and helping drive project decisions. Work takes place primarily in a manufacturing area adjacent to a laboratory. The position involves following strict safety protocols, including BSL-2 procedures, and may involve exposure to biological agents and cryogenics when servicing equipment. Required personal protective equipment includes a lab coat, safety glasses, and gloves. The schedule is flexible and set in alignment with the manager and team, with occasional evenings or weekends for time-sensitive builds or testing.

  • Experience with 3D CAD software such as Onshape or SolidWorks, including modeling and creating detailed drawings.
  • Knowledge of mechanical components, common engineering metals and plastics, joining methods, part fabrication methods, and finishing operations.
  • Understanding of design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA) principles.
  • Highly motivated, independent, curious, and eager to learn.
  • Ability to reach, stoop, crouch, and kneel, including entering and working inside a robotic cluster for maintenance, cleaning, or intervention.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and lift up to 5 lbs overhead.
  • Manual dexterity to use hand tools, manage cabling, and perform mechanical adjustments.
  • Ability to follow strict safety protocols and maintain situational awareness in a manufacturing area adjacent to a lab.
  • Ability to use required PPE, including a lab coat, safety glasses, and gloves, for extended periods.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience iterating through design cycles from concept through production, including concept generation, downselection, rapid prototyping, testing, analysis, and manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience with machine shop and prototyping tools.

Responsibilities

  • Own consumable and robotic design projects.
  • Investigate applicable technologies and components.
  • Prototype, test, and iterate on designs.
  • Create supporting design documentation, including 3D CAD models and detailed drawings.
