Mechanical Engineering Co-op/Intern (Spring 2027)

Multiply Labs•San Francisco, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Multiply Labs is a robotics company working to automate the manufacturing of advanced biologics, including gene and cell therapies and antibodies. The company develops robotic systems intended to make biologics manufacturing more scalable and accessible. The Mechanical Engineering Co-op/Intern will join the team in San Francisco for a full-time co-op/internship beginning in January 2027. The role applies engineering skills to the design of robotic cartridges and consumables used in manufacturing pharmaceutical products. Working with a cross-functional hardware and software team, the intern will help design and build current and future generations of robotic consumables, from selecting and designing components and setting design goals through prototyping and production. Success requires first-principles design optimization, strong documentation, and the ability to turn ideas into action while coordinating with colleagues and helping drive project decisions.

Requirements

  • Currently working toward a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Strong mechanical fundamentals, creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills.
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems by breaking them down into simpler pieces and executable tasks.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software such as Onshape or SolidWorks, including modeling and creating detailed drawings.
  • Knowledge of mechanical components, common engineering metals and plastics, joining methods, part fabrication methods, and finishing operations.
  • Understanding of design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA) principles.
  • Highly motivated, independent, curious, and eager to learn.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience iterating through design cycles from concept through production, including concept generation, downselection, rapid prototyping, testing, analysis, and manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience with machine shop and prototyping tools.

Responsibilities

  • Own consumable and robotic design projects.
  • Investigate applicable technologies and components.
  • Prototype, test, and iterate on designs.
  • Create supporting design documentation, including 3D CAD models and detailed drawings.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation of $5,000 per month.
  • Ownership of meaningful design projects on robots that go into production.
  • Mentorship working alongside experienced mechanical, robotics, and software engineers.
  • Catered team lunches, a stocked kitchen, and frequent team events.
  • Flexible scheduling: set your own schedule in alignment with your manager and team, with success measured by impact and outcomes.
