Mechanical Engineer - Intern

Durin Mining Technologies Corp.•El Segundo, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Durin is seeking a Mechanical Engineer intern to design and develop mechanical hardware, working from early concepts through production-ready drawings. The role involves modeling complex assemblies in CAD and owning sub-assemblies, with substantial hands-on time in the shop assembling, modifying, and repairing designs. The intern will use rapid-prototyping methods, design and conduct hardware tests, and work directly with machine shops and suppliers to ensure parts are made to specification and on schedule. This is a hands-on hardware role. Applicants should be comfortable with shop tools and an environment that is fast-paced and less structured than a traditional corporate workplace. Applicants are asked to submit a resume and a portfolio or link showing something they have physically built, including what went wrong and how they fixed it.

Requirements

  • CAD fluency, including top-down design and management of large assemblies without breaking references.
  • Understanding of manufacturing methods, including the differences between 3-axis and 5-axis machining and appropriate use of tolerances.
  • Ability to perform free-body diagrams and hand calculations to assess design safety before using simulation software.
  • Basic GD&T skills and ability to create drawings that machinists can interpret.
  • Comfort using shop tools and equipment, including a drill press, band saw, and soldering iron.
  • Willingness to work hands-on with hardware in a shop environment; the role is not fully remote.
  • Applicants must submit a resume and a portfolio or link to a physical build, explaining what went wrong and how it was fixed.

Nice To Haves

  • Practical experience building things that move, such as through Formula SAE, Baja, Solar Car, Rocketry, or BattleBots.
  • Personal or garage projects and evidence of independently learning new hands-on skills.

Responsibilities

  • Model complex mechanical assemblies in CAD, progressing from sketches to production-ready drawings.
  • Own mechanical sub-assemblies and manage large assemblies and design references.
  • Assemble, modify, and repair designs in the shop; investigate and correct fit issues.
  • Use 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining to rapidly validate ideas.
  • Design test fixtures and test hardware to identify failure points.
  • Communicate directly with machine shops and suppliers to ensure parts meet specifications and deadlines.
