Mechanical Engineer – Generalist

LLNL•Livermore, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has multiple openings for Generalist Mechanical Engineers supporting National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) / Light Matter and Fusion (LMF) projects. The work involves electromechanical systems integrating electrical, optical, and mechanical components; novel laser diagnostics; large-scale laser beam path mechanics; precision laser-component positioners; and laser system support hardware. Engineers contribute to projects ranging from next-generation laser systems to upgrades of current systems, across the product development life cycle from concept initiation and requirements gathering through implementation, testing, and installation. The positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations Division within the Engineering Directorate and require full-time on-site presence. Hiring may be at either SES.1 or SES.2, based on knowledge and related experience. At SES.1, the engineer works under general direction, applying fundamental knowledge and standard techniques while contributing to project milestones. At SES.2, the engineer works under limited direction, exercises independent judgment, contributes to moderately complex or complex engineering work, and provides updates to management.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Fundamental knowledge and experience in the design, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of systems of limited complexity.
  • Fundamental knowledge of common data-analysis techniques, statistics, and/or systems engineering.
  • Basic operational experience with and fundamental knowledge of machine structural design, assembly, or control-design processes.
  • Foundational understanding of design principles and their practical application.
  • Experience applying established process engineering and workflow optimization.
  • Experience using standard project management practices.
  • Experience participating in multidisciplinary teams to solve technical problems of limited complexity under general direction.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team and present and explain technical information.
  • Additional SES.2 qualification: comprehensive knowledge of moderately complex to complex precision hardware and mechanical system design.
  • Additional SES.2 qualification: comprehensive knowledge and experience in mechanical-system design, commissioning, operation, and maintenance.
  • Additional SES.2 qualification: broad experience applying systems engineering processes to mechanical design and testing.
  • Additional SES.2 qualification: broad experience identifying, defining, and solving moderately complex to complex multidisciplinary problems in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Additional SES.2 qualification: proficiency and broad experience participating in design reviews and/or informally mentoring others in a technical specialty.
  • Additional SES.2 qualification: demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment in selecting techniques, methods, and evaluation criteria for technical problems, interact with management, and provide input on project technical issues.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to conceptual designs and supporting analysis for current and next-generation laser and electromechanical systems, supporting equipment, and components in accordance with derived requirements.
  • Collaborate on detailed design, component fabrication, and assembly for systems of limited complexity.
  • Participate in the design and characterization of machine subsystems, including prototype testing and diagnostics, tolerance stack-up assessment, error-budget formulation, and measured error compensation.
  • Help develop and execute test plans for prototype components and systems, recommend solutions to problems, and support performance and reliability.
  • Analyze components and contribute to safety and engineering documentation in support of process requirements and operational excellence.
  • Present technical findings and participate in engineering design reviews.
  • Prepare technical documents and clear, concise technical presentations.
  • Help develop and implement commissioning, maintenance, and calibration procedures for well-defined subsystems; analyze, summarize, and present results.
  • Contribute to detailed project plans, schedules, and budgets.
  • Collaborate with team members to integrate and ensure proper functioning of commissioned systems.
  • At SES.2, contribute to scope, schedule, budget, and quality for moderately complex to complex engineering work and provide regular management updates.
  • At SES.2, develop solutions to moderately complex engineering problems and contribute to enhanced system capabilities.
  • At SES.2, independently determine methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for contributing to commissioning instrumentation and tooling hardware design and function.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
