Mechanical Engineer – Generalist

LLNL•Livermore, CA
•$121,830 - $185,544•Onsite

About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has multiple openings for Generalist Mechanical Engineers supporting National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) / Light Matter and Fusion (LMF) projects. The role provides technical expertise for electromechanical systems integrating electrical, optical, and mechanical components; novel laser diagnostics; large-scale laser beam path mechanics; precision laser component positioners; and laser system support hardware. Engineers contribute to projects involving next-generation laser systems and upgrades to existing systems, participating throughout the product development life cycle from concept initiation and requirements gathering through implementation, testing, and installation. The positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate and require full-time on-site presence. The positions may be filled at the SES.1 or SES.2 level based on the selected candidate’s knowledge and relevant experience. At SES.1, the engineer works under general direction with limited responsibility, applying fundamental knowledge and standard techniques. At SES.2, the engineer works under limited direction with moderate responsibility, applies comprehensive knowledge and independent judgment, and contributes to project and organizational goals. The role is career indefinite. A DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship, is required.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Fundamental knowledge of and experience with the design, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of systems of limited complexity.
  • Fundamental knowledge of common data analysis techniques, statistics, and/or systems engineering.
  • Basic operational experience with and fundamental knowledge of machine structural design, assembly, or control design processes.
  • Foundational understanding of design principles and their practical application.
  • Experience applying established process engineering and workflow optimization.
  • Experience using standard project management practices to drive project success.
  • Experience participating in multidisciplinary teams to solve technical problems of limited complexity while working under general direction.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • At SES.2, comprehensive knowledge of moderately complex to complex precision hardware and mechanical system design.
  • At SES.2, comprehensive knowledge of and experience with design, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • At SES.2, broad experience applying systems engineering processes to mechanical design and testing.
  • At SES.2, broad experience identifying, defining, and solving moderately complex to complex multidisciplinary problems in a timely, cost-effective manner.
  • At SES.2, proficiency and broad experience participating as an active member of design review processes and/or informally mentoring others in areas of technical specialty.
  • At SES.2, demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment in determining optimal techniques, methods, and evaluation criteria for assigned technical problems, interact with management, and provide input on technical issues for specific projects.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to conceptual design and supporting analysis for current and next-generation laser and electromechanical systems, supporting equipment, and components in accordance with derived requirements.
  • Collaborate with team members on detailed design, component fabrication, and assembly of systems of limited complexity.
  • Participate in design and characterization of machine subsystems, including prototype testing and diagnostics, tolerance stack-up assessment, error-budget formulation, and measured error compensation.
  • Help develop and execute test plans for prototype components and systems, and recommend solutions to performance or reliability problems of limited complexity.
  • Analyze components and contribute to safety and engineering documentation to support process compliance and operational excellence.
  • Present technical findings and participate in engineering design reviews.
  • Prepare technical documents and clear, concise technical presentations.
  • Contribute to solutions for commissioning, maintenance, and calibration procedures for well-defined subsystems, including analyzing, summarizing, and presenting data results.
  • Contribute to detailed project plans, schedules, and budgets under general direction.
  • Collaborate with team members to integrate commissioned systems and ensure they function properly.
  • At SES.2, contribute to scope, schedule, budget, and quality for moderately complex to complex engineering work and provide regular management updates.
  • At SES.2, develop solutions to moderately complex engineering problems and contribute to enhanced system capabilities using systems engineering processes.
  • At SES.2, determine methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for contributing to hardware design and the function of commissioning instrumentation and tooling.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
