Mechanical Engineer - Thermal R&D

Mainstream Engineering•Rockledge, FL

About The Position

Mainstream Engineering Corporation is seeking motivated thermal engineers to develop cutting-edge products for military, governmental, and commercial customers. The team designs thermal systems tailored to customer needs, including single-phase pumped loops, vapor-compression and other heat-lifting cycles, and radiation thermal management. Current applications include extending the range of hypersonic vehicles, enabling power-dense laser weapons on small platforms, and reducing the size, weight, and power of aerospace systems. Typical components include electronics coldplates, heat exchangers, thermal energy storage devices, and mechanical components for thermal systems. Thermal engineers drive products from conception through production, including ideation, research, laboratory and prototype builds, experimental testing, and design for manufacture. Engineers lead their own projects and research, with the opportunity to pursue technologies based on their creativity and interests. Current techniques include microchannel cooling, additive-manufactured three-dimensional cooling passages, membrane-enhanced cooling, and oscillating heat pipes. The work includes proposal writing, analytical calculations, CFD and FEA simulations, laboratory builds and testing, and direct customer interaction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME).
  • U.S. citizenship, required due to ITAR regulations.
  • GPA of at least 3.3 for all degrees.
  • Solid understanding of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics.
  • Hands-on laboratory test experience.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems, including temperature, pressure, flow, and other sensors.
  • Problem-solving and innovation skills, intellectual curiosity, service-mindedness, and internal motivation.

Nice To Haves

  • LabVIEW experience is preferred.
  • CFD/FEA modeling experience, including ANSYS/FLUENT, is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop thermal products and systems for military, governmental, and commercial customers.
  • Lead individual projects and research from product conception through production.
  • Contribute to product ideation, research, laboratory and prototype builds, experimental testing, and design for manufacture.
  • Write proposals for prospective projects and research ideas.
  • Perform analytical calculations and computational simulations, including CFD and FEA.
  • Build and test systems in the laboratory.
  • Interface directly with customers.
