Mechanical Engineer (Mid-Sr)

Stoke Space•Kent, WA
•$109,725 - $252,105

About The Position

Stoke is building Nova, a fully and rapidly reusable launch vehicle designed for daily flight. The Mechanical Engineer will own critical mechanical and structural hardware from concept through flight operations, designing, analyzing, building, testing, and integrating vehicle primary structures, fluids and avionics component packaging, and secondary structures. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role that involves solving new problems, working across disciplines, and delivering hardware that performs in demanding conditions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on engineering experience designing, building, and testing hardware.
  • Exceptional command of mechanical engineering fundamentals, including statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD and creating detailed manufacturing drawings.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience with structural analysis using both hand calculations and finite element analysis.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, including machining, sheet metal, welding, and additive manufacturing.
  • Proven ability to take ownership, work independently, and deliver results.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to tackle unfamiliar challenges.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex problems simply.
  • U.S. citizenship, U.S. lawful permanent residency, or protected-individual status as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), to comply with ITAR export-control requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with NX and ANSYS or similar tools.
  • Background in aerospace, automotive, or other high-performance hardware.
  • Familiarity with launch vehicles, propulsion systems, or cryogenic systems.
  • Experience designing for extreme environments, including thermal cycling, vibration, shock, and vacuum.
  • Hands-on test-campaign experience, including developing test plans, instrumentation, running tests, and analyzing data.
  • Exposure to avionics integration, harness routing, or electronics packaging.
  • Experience in fast-paced startup or rapid-development environments.
  • Track record of shipping hardware from first principles through production.

Responsibilities

  • Own mechanical and structural hardware from concept through flight operations.
  • Design and analyze structural components, fluids and avionics component packaging, and vehicle integration hardware.
  • Perform structural and thermal analysis using hand calculations and finite element analysis, selecting an appropriate method for each problem.
  • Write margin summaries, which may include developing loads or load cases.
  • Create CAD models and manufacturing drawings with proper GD&T.
  • Work directly with machinists, welders, and technicians to build and test hardware.
  • Procure parts, manage suppliers, and keep hardware on schedule and within budget.
  • Troubleshoot failures, disposition non-conformances, and drive root-cause corrective action.
  • Test and improve hardware through vibration, thermal, structural, and pressure testing.
  • Lead design reviews and communicate technical decisions clearly.
  • Continuously improve designs to reduce cost, increase reliability, and improve manufacturability.
  • Perform failure analysis of components related to thermal conditions, loads, vibration, and shock.

Benefits

  • Stock options for regular, full-time employees.
  • Comprehensive benefits program, including subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Company-paid life and disability insurance.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match.
