About The Position

Quantum Space is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer III to lead the design, development, integration, and testing of flight hardware for next-generation spacecraft programs. The role owns mechanical components and subsystems across the full hardware development lifecycle, from requirements definition and detailed design through manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing. The engineer helps ensure mission-critical spacecraft hardware is reliable, performs as intended, and can be manufactured, while working with mechanical and systems engineering, assembly, integration and test (AIT), and manufacturing teams. The position is based in Rockville, Maryland, or Hawthorne, California. The role requires strong mechanical design expertise, hands-on experience developing flight hardware, and the ability to independently lead technical execution in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Applicants must meet U.S. Government space technology export-control eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

  • At least 7 years of relevant experience with aerospace or space hardware development.
  • Proficiency in Creo.
  • Working knowledge of Windchill or a similar product lifecycle management (PLM) system.
  • Strong GD&T fundamentals, including ASME Y14.5, and discipline in producing quality drawing packages.
  • Experience supporting hardware through build and test cycles, rather than design work alone.
  • Meet the stated U.S. Government space technology export-control eligibility requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience writing or reviewing work instructions or build travelers.
  • Familiarity with environmental testing and test readiness processes.

Responsibilities

  • Own mechanical components and subsystems end to end, including requirements, design, analysis coordination, release, and integration support.
  • Develop CAD models and drawings in Creo; apply GD&T and define inspectable requirements.
  • Drive interface closure, including envelopes and keep-outs, fastener patterns, datums, alignment needs, and harness and thermal accommodations.
  • Support spacecraft build and integration by triaging issues, collaborating on root-cause analysis, and making corrective design updates.
  • Develop and execute verification plans, including functional checks, fit checks, environmental test preparation support, and acceptance or qualification evidence generation.
  • Support preliminary and critical design reviews, test readiness reviews, and configuration boards with clear technical content.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and procurement to clarify requirements, review vendor designs, and support receiving and inspection disposition.
